If you are like me, you probably like to buy things, thinking that you definitely can do more, be more efficient or just simply NEED those things. They can be clothing, kitchen utensils, small furniture, and pretty much almost everything.
I recently went through my closet because I needed more space and I decided to reorganize everything. Once I started doing that, I realized that I haven’t touched many of the clothes on the hangers in more than a year. Then I reminded that someone said that, if you haven’t worn something in a year, then you can get rid of it. We all have too much clothing anyway, but we still wear the same things over and over again. And it dawned on me that I could easily live without many of those things. So I started clearing my closet, and I made a pile of things I haven’t used in a while: blouses, sweaters, handbags, outdated jeans and pants. I then went through my drawers and I also selected another pile of old, but nicely ironed and kept shirts, tank tops and camis, all still in good shape. I have to admit that it took me a while to select the things I didn’t need anymore.
When my hubby got home, I asked him to check his drawers to see if he had anything he didn’t like and didn’t wear. He just went to his drawers and, without thinking twice, took out three piles of (the same, nicely ironed) shirts and T-shirts and gave them to me. I was so proud of him! 🙂 He helped me then to put everything in two plastic bags and then I scheduled a pickup with pickupsforbreastcancer.org (which I used before).
By the time I finished everything, I was ecstatic! First, I was happy that I was able to let all those things go. Then, I knew that someone in need was going to use them. And finally, and most importantly, my drawers and my closet looked amazing! I was able to create space, which makes it easy now to see and find whatever I need, and I know that whatever I have, I wear or use. It saves me time and it makes me feel lighter.
Decluttering reminded me that I already have more than I need, it taught me how to let go and made me rediscover the joy of giving. And that made me happy!
Just think about it! Donate something you don’t use anymore and realize, once again, that you already have more than you need.
