We all love coffee and we start our day with it. It keeps us going throughout our busy days and it gives us the energy we need. We cannot imagine a day without coffee.
There is nothing wrong with it, but if you’ve ever thought about cutting back on coffee – even just for awhile, to detox you body, it is important to have a plan and to start taking small steps.
This is what you can do to cut back on coffee:
1. Set a date. This is just to show yourself that you are serious about it.
2. Cut back slowly and gradually. Don’t try to give up coffee at once. Enjoy your morning coffee and try to skip the one in the afternoon.
3. Have another go-to drink. Replace your coffee with green or herbal tea. It has less caffeine, it is loaded with powerful antioxidants and it increases your metabolism.
4. Exercise more. Simply, just take your energy from exercising.
5. Eat more fruits. Replace your coffee with fruits: apples, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are extremely high in antioxidants and fibers, and they give you the energy you need.
6. Get more sleep. Try to go to bed at the same time every night.
7. Drink more water. Staying hydrated helps you be more alert and it gives you something to do when you reach for your coffee mug.
8. Meditate. If you find coffee relaxing, replace it with meditation. Reward yourself with 5 or 10 minutes of quiet sitting or meditation.
9. Drink fruit juices. Have fruit juices at hand and make sure you add carrot juice for a boost of energy. It is a good source of vitamins (A and B complex) and minerals.
Once you cut back on coffee, you will not only save money, but you will also sleep better, lower your blood pressure, decrease your anxiety levels, and go to the bathroom less often.
So, have you ever tried to cut back on coffee? What did you do? How did it go?
Let’s stay in touch! I would love if you’d follow me on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ and Bloglovin.
It’s always fun to share so let’s head over to:
As you may have seen from one of my recent posts, I am a tea-addict and don’t get the kind of cravings that I gather coffee-drinkers feel. Even so, it is important for all things to be in moderation, isn’t it and your list is an excellent reminder that there are many options available to help one change habits 🙂
I totally agree with you, Liz – everything in moderation. I also love drinking tea, especially herb teas – so refreshing! 🙂
I love coffee and used to be addicted to it. If I didn’t have it I would get terrible headaches. I cut back little by little and within a few weeks I didn’t need it at all. Great tips!
Thank you, Brittany. It’s true – I recognize those symptoms, that’s why I’m trying to cut back on coffee little by little. Thanks for stopping by.
I used to drink decaf only but the process of making it decaf can be worse than the caffeine. Every thing in moderation right?
I like decaf too, but you are right. You never know how much worse it can be. I just try to do a detox from time to time, and to replace my everyday coffee with juice, tea, or simply more water.
Fruit always helps me cut back on coffee. I always am so surprised how awake I feel after eating an apple!
That’s a good point, Amanda! An apple can be a good and healthier replacement for coffee.
Great tips! I’ve tried many on your list. But I got to be honest sometimes it doesn’t help my coffee addiction lol.
I totally agree with you here. But at least we’re trying… 🙂
Love this Ana. I find that during the summer I drink more coffee because I love ice coffee but I know by the end of the summer last year, I was really relying on the caffeine. Thank you for the reminder to reach for healthy alternatives to energize my day. 🙂
Whenever I can, I try to replace it with something healthier, like a herb tea or fruit juice. It works! 🙂
Great post! I’m actually planning a similar one since I’ve now gone three months without a single cup of coffee. Working out in the mornings is so helpful! I get twice as much energy from a twenty minute run than I ever did from a cup of coffee.

Three months without coffee?! Congratulations, Nellwyn! I can’t wait to read your post and find out more details about the way you did it.
I cut out coffee during the week, and only drink it on weekends when I can really savor and enjoy every little drop!
That’s also a great idea, Sheryl. I’m sure that now your coffee is much tastier. 🙂
So, I don’t drink coffee, but I was interested in this post because i think my friend should read it! I love her but I do worry a little about her coffee intake, lol. Replacing it with something else is a great tip!
Justine, you are such a good friend! I’m glad my post was helpful.
I was recently told that I have to cut out coffee….and I’m so sad! But, I love these tips and I will be trying them ALL as I start to completely remove it from my diet.
Thank you, Emily. I’m glad you like my tips and I hope they help.
This is something I really need to work on. I know I drink too much coffee but at the moment I’m reforming my diet for health reasons so I have to work on that first and then take control of the coffee monster!

Haha, coffee monster! One at the time, Nicole. Good luck! 🙂
I find my tea habit seems to trump my coffee problem. But man, I wish I could make going to bed at the same time every night a priority!
Great post on how to cut back on coffee. May I suggest that you can also substitute yerba mate as you are cutting down, then move to tea. Sometimes people miss the ritual as much as the caffeine.
I don’t know anything about yerba mate Karen, but I’m going to check it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks for the tips – I have three go to drinks – though one is a little pick me up when a small boost of caffeine is in need – Matcha Tea latte (green tea so some caffeine – about half a cup of coffee) normally though I will go for a cup of bone broth spiced with cumin, pepper and lemon juice or a Turmeric Latte made from Macadamia milk – with Turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, honey and pepper. #sharetheyjoylinky
Very interesting! I know of Matcha Tea and its benefits, but I’ve never tried Turmeric Latte. Now, it’s on my list!
These are some great tips! Much like I “accidentally” quit smoking after 22 years, I’ve “accidentally” cut back on my 44 cup a day (yes, you read that correctly) coffee habit recently after more than 25 years. I’ve begun drinking water and tea more regularly. Oddly enough, I haven’t had any headaches as I used to when I didn’t have my caffeine fix. I especially like the berries idea (I’m a nut for frozen blueberries). Thank you so much for sharing with #ShareTheJoyLinky!
Congratulations, Regina! I am impressed! I know t’s not easy at all to quit smoking. I also love drinking herb tea. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂
I always enjoy learning from your posts, Ana. Thanks for helping us make better choices.
Aww, thank you for your kind words. Have a sunny day! 🙂
I have nomimated you for a Happiness Award https://blondieaka.wordpress.com/2016/06/19/the-happiness-award/ as you are always smiling, happy and brighten up my day with your posts 🙂
Thank you so much! I am glad and honored. 🙂
You are welcome 🙂
I just became a tea drinker. Solved all my problems!
Great choice! 🙂
Great tips! I’ve done this recently, I swapped my coffee for water and although I still love a good coffee in the summer months an ice-cold water is so refreshing. 🙂
#sharethejoy
I just started drinking more water daily too, but of course that I enjoy a good old coffee from time to time. Thanks for stopping by, Morgan. 🙂
